오늘은 성을 구분하는 gender 와 sex의 차이점이 무엇인가 알아본다.

The difference between gender and sex

Sex and gender are two terms that  are often used interchangeably, but they actually have different meanings. Sex is a biological term that refers to the physical, genetic, hormonal characteristics that distinguish males from females. Gender, the other hand, is a social construct that refers to the roles, behaviors, expressions, and identities that are associated with being male or female.

Sex is typically determined at birth  based on person's genitalia, chromosomes, and hormones. Gender, on the other hand, is not fixed and can be fluid. A person's gender may not always align with their sex. For example, a person with XX chromosomes may identify as male, or a person with XY chromosomes may identify as female.

It is important to use the terms sex  and gender correctly. Using sex refer to gender can be harmful because it can reinforce the idea that there are only two genders, male and female.

sex와 gender 는 종종 같은 의미로 사용되지만, 엄밀히 말하면 서로 다른 개념이다. sex는 생물학적 개념으로, 남성과 여성을 구분하는 신체적, 유전적, 호르몬적 특징을 의미한다. 반면, gender는 사회문화적 개념으로, 남성 또는 여성이라는 것과 관련된 역할, 행동, 표현, 정체성을 의미한다.

sex는 출생 당시에 신체적 특징, 염색체, 호르몬 등을 기반으로 결정되는 경우가 많다. 그러나 gender는 고정된 것이 아니며 유동적인 것일 수 있다. 한 사람의 성별이 항상 그 또는 그녀의 생물학적 성별과 일치하지 않을 수 있다. 예를들어, XX 염색체를 가진 사람이 남성으로 정체화할 수도 있고, XY를 가진 염색체를 가진 사람이 여성으로 정체화할 수도 있다.

sex와 gender의 용어를 올바르게 사용하는 것은 중요하다. sex를 gender로 잘못 사용하는 것은 남성과 여성 의 두 가지 성별만 존재한다는 생각을 강화할 있어 위험할 수 있다.
