책꽂이에 "로맨틱~~" 책이 눈에 띄어 어원이 궁금해졌다.  대강의 짐작으로 늘 이해와 오해를 왔다갔다 하기에 오늘도 찾아본다.

The origin of "romantic"

The English word "romantic " originated from the Latin "romanicus", meaning "related to Rome" or "of Rome." In medieval Europe, Latin was deemed a sophisticated language, while common people spoke what was referred to as Romance language. Novels written in Romance often focused on love and heroic tales, leading to the term "romantic" being associated with such content. Originally signifying something akin to "from a Roman novel", its meaning expanded over time to convey "charming and sentimental." Today, it encompasses various meanings related to love, passion, ideals, fantasy, and dreams.
In Korean, this is translated as "낭만", originating from the Japanese term "ロマン" which refers to novels written in Romance languages and carries diverse meanings associated with love, passion, ideals, fantasy and dreams.

"로맨틱"의 어원

영어 단어 "romantic"은 라틴어 "romanicus"에서 유래한 것으로 "로 마의" 또는 "로마와 관련된"을 의미한다. 중세 유럽에서는 라틴어가 고급 언어로 여겨졌고, 서민들이 사용하는 언어는 로망스어(Romance language)라고 불렸다. 로망스어로 쓰인 소설은 주로 사랑과 영웅담을 다룬 내용이 많았고 이러한 소설의 내용을 "로맨틱"이라고 부르게 되었다.
따라서 "romantic"은 원래 "로마의 소설에 나오는 것과 같은"이라는 의미로 사용되었지만, 점차 "사랑스럽고 감미로운" 의미로 확대되었다. 현재는 "사랑, 정열, 이상, 환상, 꿈"과 관련된 다양한 의미로 사용되고 있다.
한국어에서는 "낭만"이라는 단어로 번역된다. "낭만"은 "로망스어로 쓰인 소설"을 뜻하는 일본어 "ロマン"에서 유래한 것으로, "사랑, 정열, 이상, 환상, 꿈"과 같은 다양한 의미를 가지고 있다.
