雪上加霜(설상가상)

 
얼마 전 건진 결과 당뇨 수치가 높다는 말을 듣고 주의 중이었는데 雪上加霜으로 혈압까지 널을 뛰어 응급실행ᆢ
오늘날 반갑지 않은 상황에 쓰이는 말인 "雪上加霜"을 찾아본다.

雪上加霜 ( 설상가상 )

Long ago, there was a monk named Daeyang Hwasang in China.

Daeyang Hwasang was so famous that it was  rare  to find someone who didn't know him.

So, many monks come from all over the country  to meet Daeyang Hwasang.

When people meet Daeyang Hwasang, their hearts beet faster.

"He is like a living Buddha."

"He can see right through me."

Anyone who has met Daeyang Hwasang has had similar thoughts.  That is why most people were too afraid to approach him, and they would just watch him from a distance.

One day, a monk came to visit Daeyang Hwasang.  

'I have  practice for a long time, so I'm not ashamed to meet him.' The monk thought to himself.

He confidently introduced himself to Daeyang Hwasang.

Daeyang Hwasang immediately saw through the monk's arrogance.

"You only know how to look forward, but you do not know how to look back." he said.

He was scolding the monk, the only valuing what was visible to others and neglecting his cultivation in the unseen.

The monk replied, "You are indeed adding frost to snow with those words."

In this context, "설상가상" (seolsanggasang) means "unnecessary comments" or "redundancy.""
  However, with the passage over time, its meaning has gradually expanded, and now it conveys the  idea of "a series of bad events" or "worsening situation."
 

이런 이야깁니다 ~

 
옛날 중국에 대양화상이라는 스님이 있었다. 대양화상은 모르는 사람이 없을 정도로 무척 유명했다.
그래서 전국에서 많은 스님들이 대양 화상을 만나기 위해 찾아왔다.

사람들이 대화상을 만나면 심장이 두근두근거린다.

" 그는 마치 살아있는 부처 같아."

" 그는 나를 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있어."

대양화장을 만난 사람들 대부분은 비슷한 생각을 했다. 그래서 대부분의 사람들은 그에게 다가가기를 두려워하고 멀리서 지켜보기만 했다.

어느 날 한 스님이 대양화상을 찾아왔다.

' 오랜 시간 동안 수행해 왔기 때문에 그를 만나도 부끄러워하지 않아' 스님은 혼자 생각했다.

그는 자신감 있게 대양화상에게 자신을 소개했다.

대양화상은 한눈에 스님의 거만함을 알아차렸다.

" 너는 단지 안만 보고 있을 뿐 뒤를 돌아볼 줄 모르는구나."

그는 스승님을 책망하며, 다른 사람들에게 보이는 것만 중요하게 여기고 보이지 않는 영적 수행을 소홀히 하는 것에 대해 말했다.

그러자 스님이 대답했다.
" 설상가상(눈 위에 다시 서리를 더하는)입니다."

설상가상은 원래 "불필요한 개입"이나 "일의 반복"을 의미했다. 그러나 시간이 지남에 따라 그  의미가 점차 확대되어 이제는 "일련의 불행한 일" 또는 "악화되는 상황" 이란 개념을 전달한다.
