The name Los Angeles is derived from the Spain phrase "Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles, " which means "Our Lady the Queen of Angels." In 1771, Spanish missionaries founded a settlement on the banks of the Los Angeles River and named it "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula." This means "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels of  Porciúncula" in English.
 
Los Angeles began to grow rapidly after California became a state in 1850. In the late 19th century, the city's oil industry boomed, and it became even more prosperous. In the 20th century, Los Angeles emerged as a center for the film industry, and it grew into a global city.
