The origin of Thursday

"Thursday" traces its etymology to the Norse mythological figure Thor, the god associated with thunder and lightning. The term "thunder, " signifying the auditory aspect of storms, also finds its roots in Thor. In German, Thursday is referred to as "Donnerstag, " translating to "Donar's day, " with Donar being the Germanic name for Thor.

Post-Julius Cesar's Roman conquest,  Britain, shaped by Latin culture, adopted Roman legal practices. However,  in a bit to assert    cultural identity, the English named their days after their indigenous gods, retaining the influence of Northern mythology, in Latin-derived languages, Thor evolved into the Roman god Jupiter.  In Latin, Thursday is known as "Jovis dies, " translating to "the day of Jupiter" , the supreme deity associated with the sky and thunder.  

Languages like French(jeudi), Spanish(Jueves), and Italian(Giovedi) echo this association, all meaning "Jupiter's day. " The term "Thursday" in English, as well as its Japanese counterpart, originates from Latin rather than English roots.
While Jupiter reigns as the king of gods, it also lends its name to the largest planet in our solar system. The names of  the days in Korean(일, 월, 화, 수, 목, 금, 토) derive from the five planets plus the sun and moon, adding a celestial touch to our weekly calendar.

In essence, Thursdays encapsulate a linguistic journey blending Norse mythology, Latin influence, and a cosmic perspective on the days of the week.

목요일의 어원

목요일의 어원은 북유럽 신화의 토르에서 비롯되었다. 토르는 천둥과 번개와 관련된 신으로 알려줘 알려져 있다. 천둥이라는 용어도 번개 소리를 나타내며 토르에서 비롯된 것이다. 독일어에서는 목요일을 "Donnerstag"라 부르며 여기서 , "Donar의 날"로 해석되는데, Donar는 토르의 게르만어 이름이다.

율리시스 카이사르의 로마 정복 이후 영국은 라틴 문화의 영향을 받아 로마의 법률을 채택했다. 그러나 영어는 자신들의 신에게 날짜를 지칭하여 북유럽 신화의 영향을 유지했다. 라틴어에서는 토르가 로마신 주피터로 변했으며 목요일은 "Jovis dies"로 불리며, "주피터의 날"을 의미한다.

프랑스어, 스페인어, 이탈리아어 등 다양한 언어에서도 주피터의 날을 의미하는 표현을 사용한다. 영어의 Thursday와 일본어의 해당 날짜 명칭은 영어가 아니라 라틴어에서 비롯된 것이다.

주피터는 신들의 왕이자 태양계에서 가장 큰 행성인 목성의 이름이기도 하다. 우리가 사용하는 일주일의 날짜는 5개의 행성과 해와 달을 합쳐 만들어진 것이다.
