The 22nd solar term ; Dongji

Dongji is the 22nd solar term among the 24 traditional East Asian divisions of solar year, occurring when the solar longitude reaches 270º. In the Gregorian calendar, it corresponds to November 21st or 22nd, while in the lunar calendar, it corresponds to November. Dongji marks the day with the shortest daylight and the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere, signaling the gradual lengthening of daytime thereafter.

Dongji has been regarded as a significant transition in Korea. Traditionally, people celebrate this day by consuming a special dish called 'Dongji Patjuk, ' a red bean porridge. The red color of the porridge is believed to ward off evil spirits, and its consumption is seen as a way to absorb the energy of the sun for a healthy and vibrant year ahead.

Both in the East and the West, Dongji has held cultural significance. In the Eastern traditions, in the symbolizes the rebirth of the sun, aligning with the belief that Dongji is a day when the sun dies and comes back to life. This symbolism is reflected in the red color of Dongji Patjuk, representing the sun's vitality. In the Western cultures, Dongji corresponds to the winter solstice, marking the onset of winter. Festivities such as Roman Saturnalia were celebrated during this time, featuring the sharing of food and drinks to welcome the winter season.

While the interpretations of  Dongji differ between East and West, they both acknowledge its importance as a pivotal moment marking the beginning of winter  and have unique customs and  beliefs associated with this significant solar term.

동지는 24 절기 중 스물두 번째 절기로, 태양의 황경이 270º 가 되는 날이다. 양력으로는 12월 21일 또는 12월 22일이며, 음력으로는 11월에 해당한다. 동지는 1년 중 밤이 가장 길고 낮이 가장 짧은 날로, 북반구에서는 이날부터 낮의 길이가 점차 길어지기 시작한다.

동지는 옛날부터 우리나라에서 중요한 절기로 여겨졌다. 이날에는 동지 팥죽을 쑤어 먹는 풍습이 있다. 이는 팥의 붉은색이 잡귀를 물리친다고 믿어져 액막이 음식으로 먹어왔다.

동지는 동서양 모두에서 중요한 절기로 여겨져 왔다. 동양에서는 동지를 태양이 죽었다가 다시 살아나는 날로 여겨왔다. 이러한 의미는 동지 팥죽의 붉은색과도 관련이 있다. 붉은색은 태양을 상징하는 색으로, 동지 팥죽을 먹으면 태양의 기온을 받아 건강하고 활기찬 한 해를 보낼 수 있다고 믿었다. 서양에서는 동지를 winter solstice라고 부르며, 겨울의 시작을 의미하는 절기로 여겨왔다. 동지에는 겨울이 시작됨을 축하하는 다양한 행사가 열렸다. 예를 들어, 로마에서는 동지 축제인 Saturnalia를 열어 술과 음식을 나누며 즐겼다.

동서양에서 동지의 의미는 다르지만, 모두 겨울의 시작을 의미하고 중요한 절기로 여겨왔다는 공통점이 있다.
