[영어] 평화롭고 우호적인 분열 "Velvet Divorce"

여행 관련 프로그램에서 "벨벳 이혼"이라는 표현을 보았다. 아름답지만은 않은 단어 "이혼"의 수식어로 "벨벳"이 웬 말 인가 싶어  오늘도 찾아본다.

체코슬로바키아의 분리 독립이야기

Velvet Divorce

A : Have you ever heard of velvet divorce?
B : Yes, I have. It was when Czechoslovakia split into two countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in 1993.
A : That's right. It was a very peaceful and amicable split, which is why it's called the "Velvet Divorce. "
B : I think it's a very interesting
story. What were the main reasons fot the split?
A : There were a few reasons, but the main ones were cultural and political differences. Czechs and Slovaks have different languages, cultures, and histories. They also had different political views.
B : So, the two countries just decided to go their separate ways?
A : Not exactly. There was a lot of negotiations and compromise involved. But in the end, both sides were willing to work together to make the split as smooth as possible.
B : That's impressive. It's a rare to see a country to split so peacefully.
A : I agree. It's a testament to the maturity and cooperation of the Czech and Slovak people.
B : What do you think the legacy of the Velvet Divorce is?
A : I think it's a reminder that even in the face of conflict, It's possible to find a peaceful resolution. It's also a model for other countries that are facing possibility of division.

벨벳이혼

A : 벨벳 이혼에 대해서 들어본 적 있니?
B : 그럼. 1993년에 체코슬로바키아가 체코와 슬로바키아로 평화롭게 분리된 사건이지.
A : 맞아. 벨벳 이혼이라고 불리는 이유는, 아주 평화롭고 우호적으로 분리되었기 때문이지.
B : 아주 흥미로운 이야기 같아. 분리의 주된 이유는 뭐였어?
A : 몇 가지 이유가 있었지만, 주된 이유는 문화적, 정치적 차이였어. 체코와 슬로바키아는 언어, 역사, 문화가 달라. 또한 정치적 견해도 달랐지.

A : 나도 그렇게 생각해. 그건 체코와 슬로바키아 국민들의 성숙함과 협력의 증거야.
B : 벨벳 이혼의 유산은 뭐라고 생각해?
A : 갈등의 상황에서도 평화적인 해결책을 찾을 수 있다는 것을 일깨워 주는 사건이라고 생각해. 또한 분리 가능성에 직면해 있는 다른 나라들에게도 모델이 될 수 있어.
