Sondol Wind

During the Mongol invasion of the Goryeo Dynasty, the king fled to Ganghwa Island. A boatman named Sondol ferried the king and his entourage across the river.
Sondon chose a safe route, taking the boat through the Choji rapids. The king, in a hurry, thought that Sondol was trying to harm him by taking the boat to another place. He ordered his ministers to behead Sondol. At that time, Sondol told the king that if he died, he could avoid the Mongols and escape the dangerous waters by floating a gourd from the boat and following it. After killing Sondol, the enemy followed, so the king and his entourage were able to safely flee to Ganghwa Island as Sondol had said. The king was so impressed by Sondol's loyalty that he built a tomb for him and performed a ritual to comfort his soul.

Sondol was unjustly killed on October 20th. After that, a cold wind blew every year on that day, driven by Sondol's vengeful spirit. This wind was called "Sondol Wind", and the rapids were called "Sondol Rapids." As a result, fisherman avoided going out to see on that day, ordinary people began to prepare for winter.

손돌바람

고려시대 몽고군의 침입으로 왕이 강화도로 피난을 할 때 손돌이라는 뱃사공이 왕과 그 일행을 배에 태워 건너게 되었다. 손돌은 안전한 물길을 택해 초지(草芝)의 여울로 배를 몰았다.마음이 급한 왕은 손돌이 자신을 해치려고 배를 다른 곳으로 몰아가는 것으로 생각하고 신하를 시켜 손돌의 목을 베도록 명하였다.이 때 손돌은 왕에게 자신이 죽은 뒤 배에 있는 박을 물에 띄우고 그것을 따라가면 몽고군을 피하며 험한 물길을 벗어날 수 있다는 말을 남기고 죽었다. 손돌을 죽이자 적이 뒤따라오므로 왕과 그 일행은 손돌의 말대로 박을 띄워 무사히 강화로 피할 수 있었다. 왕은 손돌의 충성에 감복해 그의 무덤을 만들고 제사를 지내 그 영혼을 위로하였다.

손돌이 억울하게 죽은 날은 10월 20일이었는데 그 뒤 이 날이 되면 손돌의 원혼에 의해 매년 추운 바람이 불어왔다. 이에 이를 "손돌바람"이라 하고, 이 여울목을 "손돌목 이라 하였다. 이로 인해 어부들은 이 날 바다에 나가는 것을 삼가고, 평인들은 겨울옷을 마련하는 풍습이 생기게 되었다.
