잭오랜턴(Jack-o'-lantern) 이야기

이맘때쯤 에버랜드에 가면 온통 사람 모양으로 조각된 호박들이 웃고 있었다.
신기하기도 재밌기도 한 웃는 호박들을 잭오랜턴이라고 부른다.

잭오랜턴 이야기

Once upon a time, there was a trickster named Jack who lived in a village in Ireland. Jack was so cunning that he even made a deal with the devil. One day, Jack was walking down the road when he met the devil. The devil wanted to take Jack's soul, but Jack tricked the devil and saved his own soul.

To keep the devil from taking his soul, Jack gaved an apple with a cross carved into it. The devil saw the cross and was scared away. Jack lived a long life, but he was a bad person. He didn't go to heaven or hell when he died. He was doomed to wander the Earth forever. To light his way on dark night, he carried a spark of fire  that he  had gotten from the devil in a pumpkin.

The  pumpkin that Jack carried became the symbol of Halloween. Jack-o'-lanterns are believed to ward off devil spirits, so it is customary to decorate houses with Jack-o'-lanterns on Halloween.

This story has been passed down for centuries in Ireland. Jack-o'-lanterns have become a symbol of Halloween and are known around the world.

옛날에 아일랜드의 한 마을에 잭이라는 사람이 살았다. 잭은 악마와도 거래할 정도로 교활한 사람이었다. 어느날, 길을 걷다가 악마를 만났다. 악마는 잭의 영혼을 빼앗으려 했지만, 잭은 악마를 속여 자신의 영혼을 지켰다.

악마에게 영혼을 빼앗기지 않으려고
십자가를 새긴 사과를 악마에게 주었다. 악마는 십자가를 보고 겁을 먹고 도망가게 되었다. 잭은 오래 살았지만 나쁜 사람이어서 천국에도 지옥에도 가지 못하고 영원히 구천을 떠돌아 다니게 되었는데, 악마에게 얻은 불씨를 호박에 넣어 다니게 되었다.

잭이 들고 다니던 호박이 할로윈의 상징이 되었다. 잭오랜턴은 악령을 쫒아낸다고 믿어져, 할로윈데이에 집 앞에 잭오랜턴을 장식하는 풍습이 있다.

이 이야기는 오랫동안 아일랜드에 전해내려오는 이야기이다. 잭오랜턴은 할로윈의 상징물로 자리 잡았으며 전 세계적으로 많은 사람들에게 알려져있다.
