가을은 독서의 계절이라는데 도대체 왜 이런 말이 생겼을까?

The story of autumn being recognized as the 'season of  reading' originates from the Tang Dynasty in China, where a person named Han Yu wrote '符讀書城南( A Letter to His Son on the importance of Reading in the South of the City)' to encourage  his son's reading. In this poem, the phrase '燈火可親(light and warmth invite intimacy)' appears, signifying that autumn is an ideal season for studying due to its cool weather,  clear skies,  and bountiful harvest.

However, from a publishing industry perspective, the situation is different. Sales statistics show that book  sales are highest during the winter and the beginning of the academic year,  with a noticeable decrease as autumn approaches. Some even argue that the statement, 'Books don't sell well in the fall, hence created to encourage reading, ' is myth. In earlier agrarian societies,  people read books in autumn to enrich their minds when harvests were plentiful,  but in today's industrialized society,  this practice may be considered inappropriate.

In summary,  while autumn is perceived as the 'season of reading, ' from the publishing industry's standpoint, there is a trend of declining book sales in the autumn,  highlighting a discrepancy between why autumn  is considered the season of reading and actual sales trends.
