The origin of Wednesday 

 

The English word "Wednesday" comes from the Old English word "Woden's  day." Woden is the god of wisdom and war in Germanic mythology, and is known as Odin in Norse mythology. Therefore Wednesday means "Woden's  day", and is derived from the culture of the Vikings, who worshipped Woden.

Wednesday has a similar etymology  in other Germanic languages as well. For example, the German word "Mittwoch", the Dutch word "Woensdag", the Danish word "Onsdag", and the Swedish word "Onsdag" all mean "Wednesday".

On the other hand, In languages such as Latin, French, Spanish, and Italian, Wednesday is named after the Roman god Mercury. Mercury is the god of commerce, travel, fraud, and theft, and Wednesday was considered a day of active commercial activity.

The Korean word for Wednesday is thought to have come from the word "water"(수). This is because Wednesday is the day of week with the strongest energy of water in the five elements theory.

영단어  Wednesday는 고대 영어 "Woden's  day"에서 유래했다. Woden은 게르마신 화에서 지혜와 전쟁의 신으로, 북유럽 신화에서는 오딘으로 알려져 있다. 따라서, Wednesday는 "Woden의 날"이라는 뜻으로, Woden을 숭배하던 바이킹 족의 문화에서 유래한 것이다.

Wednesday는 영어뿐만 아니라 다른 게르만 언어권에서도 비슷한 어원을 갖고 있다. 예를 들어, 독일어의 Mittwoch, 네네덜 란드 어의 Woensdag, 덴마크 어의 Onsdag, 스웨덴어의 Onsdag 등이 모두 Woden의 날이라는 뜻이다.

한편 라틴어, 프랑스어, 스페인어, 이탈리아어 등의 언어에서는 수요일이 로마 신화의 신인 Mercury의 이름을 따서 명명되었다. Mercury는 상업, 여행, 사기, 도둑질 등을 관장하는 신으로, 수요일은 상업 활동이 활발한 날로 여겨졌다.

한국어의 수요일은 "水"에서 유래한 것으로 추정된다. 오행설에서 수요일은 "水"의 기운이 가장 강한 날로 여겨졌기 때문이다.
