Peppero Day : A unique Korean Holiday

Peppero is a unique Korean Holiday celebrated on November 11th. On this day, people give and receive peppero, a popular chocolate-coated biscuit stick. The number 11 in November 11 resembles four peppero sticks standing up, which  is  the origin of  the holiday.

Peppero Day is believed to have originated in 1994 among high school girls in Busan, South Korea. The original meaning was to encourage each other to lose weight. Later, Lotte Confectionery, the manufacturer of peppero, promoted Peppero Day as a marketing campaign, and it quickly spread nationwide.

Peppero Day is a day to express gratitude and love to loved ones, such as romantic partners, friends and family. Peppero is a relatively inexpensive treat, so anyone can participate without feelig burdened.

Some people criticize Peppero Day as being too commercialized. However, it is also  a meaningful day to connect with loved ones through the exchange of peppero.

빼빼로데이는 11월 11일에 초콜릿 과자인 빼빼로를 주고 받는 기념일이다. 11월 11일의 숫자 1이 빼빼로 4개를 세워놓은 모양과 비슷하다는 데에서 유래되었다.

빼빼로데이는 1994년 부산의 여고생들 사이에서 시작되었다. 서로 날씬해지라는 의미에서 빼빼로를 교환한 것이 그 기원이라고 한다. 이후 롯데제과에서 빼빼로데이를 마케팅에 활용하면서 전국적으로 널리 퍼지게 되었다.

빼빼로데이는 연인, 친구, 가족등 차한 사람들과 빼빼로를 주고 받으며, 감사와 사랑을 표현하는 날이다. 빼빼로는 저렴한 가격에 구입할 수 있어 누구나 부담없이 참여할 수 있다.

빼빼로데이는 상술이 과하다는 지적도 있지만, 빼빼로를 주고 받으며 소중한 사람들과 마음을 나누는 의미 있는 날이기도 하다.
