The Origin of Cotton Candy

 

A : Did you know that cotton candy was invented in Italy in the 1400s?
B : No, I didn't I thought it was invented in the United States.
A : Well, it was invented in Italy, but is didn't look like the cotton candy we know today. It was made with sugar and water, but it was more like a solid block of candy.
B : Oh, I see. So, how did it become the fluffy, airy treat we know today?
A : That's thanks to William J. Morrison, a dentist from the United States. In 1897, he stared working on a way to make candy with less sugar. He partnered with a candy maker named John C. Wharton, and in 1899, they invented a machine that spun sugar into a fluffy, light cloud.
B : That's amazing! So, they were the ones who invented the cotton candy machine?
A : Yes, they were. They called it the "fairly floss machine, " and they first introduced it at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. They sold it for 25 cents, which was half the price of admission th the fair.
B : Wow, that's a lot of money for cotton candy!
A : I know right? But it was a huge hit! They sold over 70,000 servings of cotton candy at the fair.
B : That's incredible! Cotton candy is such a popular treat today. It's hard to believe that is's  only been aroud for about 120 years.
A : I know.  It's amazing how quickly it became so popular
B :  I agree!

B : 그래. 그렇다면 어떻게 오늘날 우리가 알고 있는 폭신하고 가벼운 간식이 되었을까?
A : 그건 미국 출신 치과의사 윌리엄 J. 모리슨 덕분이야. 1897년 그는 설탕을 적게 사용하여 사탕을 만드는 방법을 연구하기 시작했어. 사탕 제조업자인 존 C. 워튼과 파트너십을 맺었고, 1899년에는 설탕을 폭신하고 가벼운 구름으로 만드는 기계를 발명했어.
B : 놀라워. 그들이 솜사탕 기계를 발명한 거야?
A : 응, 맞아. 그들은 그것을 "요정의 실 기계"라고 불렀고, 1904년 미주리주 세인트 루이스에서 열린 만국 박람회에서 처음으로 선보였어. 그들은 박람회 입장료의 절반인 25센티에 판매했어.
