백악관은 원래부터 White House 였을까?

The United States began construction of its presisdential residence in 1792, a building that would eventually be known as the White House. The building was constructed in the Neoclassical style using sandstone fo rthe eterior. To protect it from weathering, the exterior was painted white with lime. Because the white exterior contrastd so sharply with the surrounging red brick buildings, poeple began to naturally call it the White House.
 
Eight years afte construction began, John Adams and this wife beame the first cccupants of the building, which would eventually be known as the White House. After the British burned the building to the ground in 1814, it was restored to its original condition in 1818 after extensive repairs. The restoration was copleted with lead-based white paint that would not fade.
 
A hundred years later, President Roosevelt ordered that the phrase "The White House - Washington" be inscribed on all official presidential correspondende. From that time on, the White House, which had been little more than a colloquial name, became the  official name.

미국은 1972년에 대통령 관저의 건설을 시작했는데, 이 건물은 나중에 백악관으로 알려지게 된다. 그 건물은 외부에 사암을 사용하여 신고전주 양식으로 지어졌다. 풍화로부터 보호하기 위해 외부는 석회로 하얗게 칠해졌다. 하얀 외부는 주변의 붉은 벽돌 건물들과 매우 극명한 대조를 보였기 때문에 사람들은 자연스럽게 그것을 백악관이라고 부르기 시작했다.

건축이 시작된 지 8년 후, 존 아담스와 그의 아내는 후에 백악관으로 알려지게 된 그 건물의 첫 번째 거주자가 되었다. 영국인들이 1814년에 그 건물을 불태운 후 대대적인 수리 후에 1818년에 원래의 상태로 복원되었다. 복원은 퇴색되지 않는 납으로 된 흰색 페인트로 건물을 칠함으로써 완성되었다.

100년 후 로즈벨트 대통령은 모든 대통령 공식 서신에 "백악관 - 워싱턴"이라는 문구를 새겨 넣으라고 명령했다. 그때부터 구어체 이름에 불과했던 백악관이 공식 명칭이 되었다.
