The history of New York

 

A : Hey, have you  ever heard  about the history of New York?
B : Ywah, a little bit. I know that it was founded by the Dutch in the 17th century.
A : That's right. In 1626, Dutch colonists founded a trading post on Manhattan Island. They called it New Amsterdam.
B : And then the British took over in 1664, right?
A : Yes, that's right. The British renamed it New York after the Duke of York, who was the brother of King Chares Ⅱ.
B : So, New York was originally a Dutch colony, but it became a British colony in the 17th century.
A : That's right. And then it became the capital of the United States from 1789 to 1790.
