Washington, D.C is the capital of the United States, an independent federal district.The city is named after George Washington, the first president of the United States, and is located on the eastern bank of the Potomac River. It was designed as a planned city by Pierre Charles L'Enfant and has a population of about 710,000. The Washington metropolitan area has a population about 6.2 million. The city is home to the central offices of all three branches of the United States federal government, as well as 174 embassies. It is also the headquarters of international organizations such as thr World Bank and International Monetary Fund. The city has a height restriction that limits building heights to the Washington Monument.
