꽃무릇 전설

몇 해전 선운사에서 꽃무릇이 스러져가는 모습을 보았다.
한창이 아니었음에도 강렬했던 이미지는 잊을 수가 없다.
가을이 왔음을 알려주는 꽃이라는데,
혹자는 상사화라고 하던데ᆢ
사실, 색상도 모양도 두 꽃은 다르더라는ᆢ

꽃무릇에 얽힌 전설을 영어로 옮겨본다.

 꽃무릇(석산): 학명 Lycoris radiata 로 수선화과에 딸린 여러해살이 알뿌리 식물로, 산기슭이나 습한 땅에 무리지어 자라 꽃무릇이라 부르며, 절근처에 흔히 심는다.

꽃무릇의 전설

In the past, There was a couple  who lived in sorrow because they couldn't have  children. They foventely prayed, and eventually, they were blessed with a daughter. This child not only had a beautiful face but also exhibited the utmost filial piety towards her parents.

One day, the father passed away, and the devoted daughter, filled with filial devotion, prayed for his peaceful journey to the afterlife, meditating  for a hundred days.

During this time, a monk from the temple was deeply moved by daughter's unwavering devotion. Despite his vow of silence in Buddhism, he found himself drawn to her. The monk deeply committed to Buddhism couldn't say a word to the woman. When she finished the meditation for her father and left, he couldn't bear the pain of separation and passed away.

The following spring, a unique wildflower blossomed at the monk's grave. It had alternating blue leaves and red flowers, earning the name, " separated love" because the leaves and flowers couldn't meet, much like the unattainable love of the departed monk.

The flowers significance in the story symbolizes an unattainable love.

이런 뜻입니다 ~

옛날에, 아이가 없어서 고민이던 부부가 있었다. 이들은 간절히 빌어 마침내 딸 하나를 얻었다. 이 아이는 얼굴만 예쁜 게 아니라 부모에 대한 효성도 지극했다.

그러던 어느 날 아버지가 돌아가시고 효심이 지극한 딸은 아버지의 금락 왕생을 빌며 100일 동안 기도를 드렸다.

이때 절에 한스님이 딸의 변함없는 정성에 깊은 감동을 받았다. 불가에 귀했음에도 불구하고,  그녀에게 끌리고 있다는 것을 알았다. 불가에 귀의한 스님은 그녀에게 한마디 말도 못하고, 아버지를 위한 기도를 마치고 그녀가 떠나자 이별의 아픔을 견디지 못하고 그만 숨을 거뒀다.

이듬해 봄 스님의 무덤에 독특한 야생화가 피어났고, 푸른 잎과 붉은 꽃을 번갈아 피워 "이별한 사랑" 이라는 이름을 얻었다. 마치 숨진 스님의 이루어질 수 없는 사랑처럼,  잎과 꽃이 만나 수 없기때문이다.

이야기 속 꽃의 의미는 이룰수 없는 사랑을 상징한다.
